Roberto Borrell demonstrates how the rhythms heard in Rumba, Timba, Son, Son Montuno and Cha Cha Cha are rooted in the music from Calabar, Africa.Transported to Cuba by centuries of slave trade, the music evolved inside the secret plantes (ceremonies) of the Abakuá Societies.
By analyzing and defining the instrumentation and the musical patterns Roberto draws the connection between modern day Cuban music and one of its’ sources, the Ekpe people of Africa, over 300 years ago.
